Cheney district schedules community forums

Cheney Public Schools is inviting all citizens of the school district to attend one or all of four forums.

The purpose of the forums is to get community comment and feedback about needs the district has identified, including replacement transportation, replacement technology, several capital needs, the priority of these needs and how best to meet them.

All forums will be at 7 p.m. and are scheduled for Tuesday at Betz Elementary School, 317 N. Seventh, Cheney; Oct. 25 at Windsor Elementary School, 5504 W. Hallett Road, Spokane; Oct. 27 at Cheney Middle School, 2716 N. Sixth, Cheney; and Nov. 7 at Sunset Elementary School, 12824 W. 12th, Airway Heights.

St. George’s honors

St. George’s seniors Katherine Kerschen and Caitlin Mauk are among 16,000 semifinalists in the 51st annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

They will be competing with 8,200 semifinalists for the awards, worth $33 million, offered next spring.

More than 1.3 million juniors from nearly 21,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2006 National Merit Program by taking the 2004 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of high school seniors and include the highest scoring entrants in each state.
