Woman booked on 20 forgery counts

From staff reports

Spokane police arrested a 19-year-old woman last week on 20 felony counts of forgery.

Jacqueline Ann Hayes, who gave her address as 12104 E. 27th Ave., was arrested at about 4:45 p.m. Thursday at Wal-Mart, 9212 N. Colton, on suspicion of forging checks.

Hayes told police that someone had given her a stolen checkbook and ID, and told her she looked enough like the real owner to pass forged checks, police spokesman Dick Cottam said in a news release Sunday.

Hayes was found to have written checks at three Wal-Mart stores, a Kmart, Fred Meyer, Albertsons, and an attempt at a Money Tree, Cottam said.

Her usual method was to purchase several items and to write the check for $20 over the total, Cottam said.

Hayes was booked on 20 felony forgery counts, Cottam said. Several other teenagers apparently were involved, and the investigation will continue.
