Apartment fire causes evacuations
A fire caused about $40,000 in damage to an apartment building in Coeur d’Alene Tuesday night, the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department reported Wednesday.
The fire department responded to the 400 block of South 11th Street at about 11 p.m. after an elderly resident of an upper floor apartment fled the fire.
“It was rolling out the window up to the roof when our guys got there,” said Chief Kenny Gabriel. “And they kept it in that room.”
The resident, whose name Gabriel didn’t have, was treated for smoke inhalation and a firefighter was treated for a minor facial cut, but otherwise no one was injured, Gabriel said.
Although the apartment building was evacuated for the night, Gabriel said he thought all but the one apartment are habitable. Firefighters believe the fire started in a wastebasket, possibly by a smoldering cigarette, Gabriel said.
