Vandals win opener

Kati Tikker totaled 13 kills and Saxony Brown had 34 assists as the University of Idaho defeated Coastal Carolina 30-26, 31-29, 30-26 on Friday at the Loyola Marymount Four Points Sheraton-LAX Classic volleyball tournament at Los Angeles.

Meghan Brown added nine kills and a .400 hitting percentage for the Vandals (3-1). The Chanticleers dropped to 1-1.

Team hitting percentages were fairly even, but the Vandals finished with an 8-2 edge in service aces.

Idaho will play Northeastern and the host Lions today.

•Nikki Havens and Felice Yocopis combined for 35 kills and 30 digs while leading Idaho State (1-1) to a 3-0 sweep over Washington State (1-1) in the opening day of the Aggie Invitational at Davis, Calif.

Jen Barcus (Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls High) had 14 kills and hit .333 for WSU.

The Bengals outhit the Cougars .323 to .152.

WSU will play Toledo and UC Davis today.

•Lizzy Mellor (Colfax) had 10 kills and Julie Reis added nine kills and a .450 attack percentage to lead Eastern Washington (2-1) to a 3-0 win over Robert Morris (1-3) in the first day of the University of North Florida Labor Day Classic at Jacksonville.

Kerri Beck (Gonzaga Prep) had nine block assists and .556 hitting for the Eagles. Andrea Verdoljak added five aces and 13 digs.

EWU plays Charleston Southern and Jacksonville today.

•Sophomore Becky Jones had 14 kills in both matches as Gonzaga (3-2) swept Morehead State (2-2) and Florida International (2-2) during the Over the Mountain Invitational at Boiling Springs, N.C.

The Zags hit .312 in the first match and .438 in the second. GU sophomore Briawna Mueller had six blocks in each match and Heather Dunn added 74 assists on the day.

GU meets Birmingham-Southern and host Gardner-Webb today.

•North Idaho went 3-1 at the Salt Lake Community College Tournament in Salt Lake City, winning its first three matches before dropping a 2-1 decision to Western Nebraska.

On the day for the Cardinals (10-2), Cintia Alessi had 35 kills, Collese Dornan 72 assists and Katie Lippi (Sandpoint) 50 digs. Also for NIC, Daidre Mendenhall (University High) totaled 15 kills in wins over Arizona Western and Indian Hills.

•Senior Sanja Tomasevic finished with 12 kills and a .600 hitting percentage as second-ranked Washington (2-0) notched a 3-0 sweep of Davidson (0-2) at the Portland Nike Invitational.

Women’s soccer

Freshman Megan Hyte scored an overtime goal in the 100th minute to give Washington State (3-0) a 3-2 non-conference comeback win over 11th-ranked Tennessee (0-2) at Knoxville, Tenn.

Hyte launched a shot from the left side of the box for her third consecutive match-winning goal.

Carmen Anderson scored off a penalty kick in the 84th minute and Jennie Kunc blasted in a shot from the right wing at 85:14 to allow the Cougars to tie the match.

•Junior Eija Hodgin scored her first career goal, on the first career assist from junior Morgan Bunday, as Idaho (1-1) posted a 1-0 non-conference win at Portland State (1-2).

Hodgin, coming down the left side, took a pass and scored into the top of the net at 15 minutes.

•Tiera Como (East Valley High) recorded her team-record seventh career shutout and senior midfielder Beth Russell scored her seventh career goal as Eastern Washington (1-2) posted a 2-0 win over Akron (1-3-1) to open the New Mexico Nike Classic at Albuquerque.

•Lacey Salisbury scored into the lower left corner early in the second half to give North Idaho (2-1) a 1-0 win over Feather River (Calif.) CC (0-1-1) at the Western Nevada CC Labor Day Classic at Carson City.

Salisbury took an indirect free kick from Meghan Kahnle.

NIC will meet the host Wildcats today.

Men’s soccer

Luke Miller (Sandpoint), Grant Lundberg (Lewis and Clark High) and George Josten each had one goal and one assist to lead Gonzaga to a 3-2 season-opening win over host Loyola at the Fr. Leo Sweeney Jesuit Cup at River Forest, Ill.

GU faces Detroit on Sunday morning.
