A seventh Spokane Chief will be attending a National Hockey League training camp.

Twenty-year-old defenseman Gustav Engman, in his third season with the Chiefs from Borlange, Sweden, has received a free-agent tryout with Vancouver and missed Spokane’s 1-0 exhibition win over Seattle on Sunday in Everett to report to the Canucks’ camp.

Engman had a career-high eight goals and 22 points in 68 games with Spokane last season. He has played in 126 Western Hockey League games the past two seasons, collecting 182 penalty minutes.

Eastern Washington came “this close” to doing something Monday that four other Florida opponents this season hadn’t accomplished – winning a game from the unbeaten Gators.

But after battling Florida (5-0) on even terms the first game, the Eagles (4-2) couldn’t sustain it and the Gators erupted from a 27-27 tie to score the game’s final three points en route to a 30-27, 30-16, 30-16 win in Gainsville.

Kerri Beck of Spokane (Gonzaga Prep) was a bright spot for the Eagles with nine kills, two block assists and a .571 hitting percentage. Easern hit just .074 for the match after hitting .335 during a four-match winning streak.
