Twins 5, White Sox 0: At Minneapolis, Johan Santana struck out 13 to lead Minnesota over Chicago, which has lost seven of its last nine games. Santana (14-7) leads the majors with 220 strikeouts.

Yankees 1, Blue Jays 0: At Toronto, Shawn Chacon (5-3) pitched eight innings, Bernie Williams had an RBI single and New York edged Toronto for its sixth straight win.

Orioles 2, Devil Rays 1: At Baltimore, Luis Matos drove in Bernie Castro with a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth, and Baltimore beat Tampa Bay.

Red Sox 2, Athletics 1: At Boston, Manny Ramirez hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth and drove in two runs, leading Bronson Arroyo (13-9) and Boston over Oakland. Boston kept its 1 1/2 -game lead over the Yankees in the East.

Indians 5, Royals 4: At Cleveland, Cliff Lee (17-4) won his eighth straight decision as Cleveland beat Kansas City to close within 3 1/2 games of Chicago in the Central. The Indians lead New York by a half-game for the wild card.

Angels 3, Tigers 1: At Anaheim, Calif., Garret Anderson capped a three-run eighth with a two-run, ground-rule double and Ervin Santana pitched eight strong innings, leading Los Angeles past Detroit. The Angels extended their lead in the West to two games over Oakland.

National League

Cardinals 5, Cubs 1: At Chicago, Mark Mulder (16-7) allowed eight hits and a run in seven innings and helped himself with a squeeze bunt and single as St. Louis defeated Chicago.

Phillies 10, Marlins 2: At Miami, Philadelphia’s first 10 batters reached base in the ninth, and the Phillies scored 10 times to beat Florida. Dontrelle Willis (21-9) was three outs from becoming baseball’s first 22-game winner, taking a three-hit shutout into the ninth.

Braves 7, Mets 4: At New York, Adam LaRoche homered and had four hits, and Marcus Giles also connected to lead Tim Hudson and Atlanta over New York.

Giants 2, Dodgers 1: At San Francisco, Omar Vizquel lined a tiebreaking single to right with two outs in the eighth and Randy Winn hit his career-high 16th home run, leading San Francisco over Los Angeles.

Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 5: At Phoenix, Tony Clark hit home runs from both sides of the plate, including a go-ahead shot in the seventh, and Chad Tracy went 4 for 4 with a homer to rally Arizona past Colorado.

Pirates 4, Reds 0: At Pittsburgh, Jason Bay had three hits, including his 30th homer, and Paul Maholm (2-0) allowed four hits in eight innings as Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati.

Astros 7, Brewers 0: At Houston, Craig Biggio hit his league-record 43rd leadoff homer to lead Houston over Milwaukee. The Astros won their fourth straight to stay a half-game ahead of Philadelphia in the wild-card race.

Padres 8, Nationals 5 (12): At San Diego, Khalil Greene’s grand slam capped a five-run, two-out rally in the ninth, and Ramon Hernandez had a three-run homer in the 12th as San Diego topped Washington. San Diego maintained its 5 1/2 -game lead over San Francisco in the West.
