Monday’s games

Associated Press

American League

Yankees 3, Orioles 2: At New York, rarely-used reserve Bubba Crosby led off the bottom of the ninth inning with his first home run this season, giving the Yankees a victory over Baltimore. Chien-Ming Wang pitched eight stellar innings for the Yankees, who have won seven of eight and 11 of 15. They trail first-place Boston by just a half-game and are 1 1/2 games behind Cleveland in the wild-card race.

Devil Rays 8, Red Sox 7: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Mark Hendrickson won his sixth straight decision and Tampa Bay held on to beat Boston. Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz drove in four runs, two on a double in the seventh that got Boston within 7-6 and another on his 44th homer that made it 8-7 with two outs in the ninth, but Danys Baez struck out Manny Ramirez to end the threat.

Indians 7, White Sox 5: At Chicago, Aaron Boone delivered a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning and Cleveland cut the White Sox’s one-time 15-game lead to 2 1/2 games by rallying for a victory. The Indians have won 13 of their last 14, including six straight, while the White Sox have lost eight of 11.

Athletics 7, Twins 6: At Oakland, Calif., Nick Swisher hit a three-run homer, Mark Ellis followed with a solo shot, and the Athletics staked Barry Zito to a quick lead and then hung on to beat Minnesota. The A’s pulled to within 1 1/2 games of A.L. West-leading Los Angeles.

Royals 10, Tigers 4: At Kansas City, Mo., Matt Stairs had three hits, including a three-run homer, and the Royals beat Detroit before their smallest home crowd in 10 years, 8,915.

National League

Pirates 7, Astros 0: At Pittsburgh, that mismatch between 340-game winner Roger Clemens and zero-game winner Ian Snell turned out to be exactly that. Only not the way Houston figured it would be. Snell limited the Astros to three singles over eight innings for his first career victory and Freddy Sanchez homered among his three extra-base hits against Clemens, leading the Pirates to a victory.

Padres 8, Rockies 7: At Denver, Khalil Greene hit two homers, including the game-winner in the ninth inning, to lift San Diego back above .500 with a victory over Colorado. Greene helped the Padres shrink their magic number in the N.L. West to eight.
