‘Incendiary device’ causes road closure

From staff reports

Spokane Valley police shut down part of Farr Road for about 20 minutes Thursday afternoon while they destroyed what appeared to be an explosive.

No one was charged in connection with the “incendiary device,” Spokane Valley police spokesman Deputy Dave Thornburg said. The item was found between a mattress and a box spring inside a home.

Police discovered a stolen vehicle about 9:40 a.m. and saw a woman retrieving items from it, Thornburg said. When police talked to the woman, Jill A. Benton, they discovered she had a warrant for possession of stolen property and arrested her.

During a search of the home they found the device, which had an electronic timer and what appeared to be two rocket engines attached, Thornburg said. The 600 block of Farr Road was shut down about 12:30 p.m. as a precaution while the item was destroyed.
