East

West Virginia 20, East Carolina 15: At Morgantown, W.Va., Adam Bednarik and Pat White each threw a touchdown pass and Antonio Lewis returned a punt 76 yards for a score to carry the Mountaineers (4-0) over the Pirates (1-2). The Mountaineers scored all their points in the first half, and then held off the Pirates, who were inside the West Virginia 20 four times in the first three quarters but unable to score a touchdown.

Western Michigan 19, Temple 16: At Philadelphia, Nate Meyer kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired to give the Broncos (2-2) a victory over the Owls (0-4).

Pittsburgh 41, Youngstown State 0: At Pittsburgh, Tyler Palko shrugged off two early Pitt turnovers to throw for three touchdowns and Raymond Kirkley scored in the first 2 minutes of each half as the Panthers (1-3) whipped the Division I-AA Penguins (3-1) – Pittsburgh’s first win under new coach Dave Wannstedt.

South

Boston College 16, Clemson 13 (OT): At Clemson, S.C., Brian Toal’s 1-yard TD run in overtime lifted the Eagles (3-1, 1-1) over the Tigers (2-2, 1-2) for their first Atlantic Coast Conference victory. The Eagles did not score for the game’s final 41 minutes after taking a 10-0 lead at Death Valley.

North Carolina 31, North Carolina State 24: At Raleigh, N.C., Barrington Edwards ran for a career-high 129 yards and a touchdown, Matt Baker recovered from a miserable first half to throw for the go-ahead score and the Tar Heels (1-2, 1-1 ACC) held off the Wolfpack (1-2, 0-2).

Auburn 37, Western Kentucky 14: At Auburn, Ala., Blake Field completed 13 of 20 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start to lead the Tigers (3-1) to a victory over the Division I-AA Hilltoppers (2-1). Field got his chance when starter Brandon Cox came down with a stomach virus shortly before game time.

Maryland 22, Wake Forest 12: At Winston-Salem, N.C., Josh Wilson returned a fumble 20 yards for a TD to lead the Terrapins (2-2, 1-1 ACC) over the Demon Deacons (1-3, 0-1).

Central Florida 23, Marshall 13: At Orlando, Fla., the Golden Knights (1-2, 1-0 Conference USA) snapped major college football’s longest losing streak at 17 games, knocking off the Thundering Herd (1-2, 0-1) behind Steven Moffett’s 260 yards passing and Matt Prater’s three field goals.

Wyoming 24, Mississippi 14: At Oxford, Miss., Corey Bramlet threw for 220 yards and two TDs to help the Cowboys (3-1) beat the Rebels (1-2). Wynel Seldon added 124 yards and a TD for Wyoming.

Vanderbilt 37, Richmond 13: At Nashville, Tenn., Jay Cutler threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns as the Commodores improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1984 with a victory over the Division I-AA Spiders (1-3).

South Carolina 45, Troy 20: At Columbia, S.C., Blake Mitchell threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns before leaving with an injury and 40-year-old walk-on Tim Frisby caught a 9-yard pass late as the Gamecocks (2-2) routed the Trojans (1-3).

Midwest

Penn State 34, Northwestern 29: At Evanston, Ill., Michael Robinson’s 36-yard TD pass to Derrick Williams with 51 seconds left lifted the Nittany Lions (4-0) to a wild win over the Wildcats (2-2).

Eastern Michigan 23, Central Michigan 20 (OT): At Mount Pleasant, Mich., Andrew Wellock kicked three field goals, including the game winner in overtime, to lead the Eagles (2-2, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) past the Chippewas (1-3, 1-1).

Kansas State 54, North Texas 7: At Manhattan, Kan., Parrish Fisher was quite a sub for Kansas State, running for 169 yards in place of Thomas Clayton and helping the Wildcats (3-0) roll up a school-record 658 yards on offense in a rout of the Mean Green (1-2). Clayton, the nation’s leading rusher, was benched for the game by coach Bill Snyder.

Ohio 35, Kent State 32: At Athens, Ohio, Kalvin McRae rushed for 200 yards and two touchdowns and Voncarie Owens ran for 139 yards and two scores to lead the Bobcats (2-2, 1-0 MAC) past the Golden Flashes (1-3, 0-1).

Akron 48, Northern Illinois 42 (OT): At Akron, Ohio, Brett Biggs scored on a 1-yard run in overtime and the Zips (2-1, 1-0 MAC) outlasted the Huskies (1-3, 0-1).

Southwest

Tulane 31, SMU 10: At Dallas, Lester Ricard completed 22 of 34 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns as the Green Wave (1-1, 1-0) beat the Mustangs (1-3, 0-1) in SMU’s Conference USA debut.

Arkansas State 66, Florida International 24: At Jonesboro, Ark., Joe Smith grabbed two touchdown passes as the Indians (2-2, 1-0) opened Sun Belt Conference play with a win over the Golden Panthers (0-3, 0-1) in their SBC debut.

Tulsa 37, Memphis 31 (OT): At Tulsa, Okla., Paul Smith threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Mills on the first play of overtime to lead the Golden Hurricane (2-2, 1-0) to a win over the Tigers (1-2, 0-1) in their Conference USA debut.

UTEP 21, New Mexico 13: At El Paso, Texas, Joe Fleskoski returned an interception 70 yards for a TD and Johnnie Higgins caught eight passes for 90 yards and a score to lead the Miners (3-0) past the Lobos (3-1).

Far West

TCU 51, BYU 50 (OT): At Provo, Utah, Cory Rodgers returned a kickoff 100 yards for TCU’s first touchdown and scored on a 3-yard run on a disputed overtime play as the Horned Frogs (3-1, 2-0 Mountain West) held off the Cougars (1-2, 0-1).
