Bulldogs sweep Pilots
Gonzaga second baseman Scott Campbell was 3 for 3 with his third home run of the season and two RBIs as the Bulldogs held off Portland 5-4 Sunday to sweep a West Coast Conference baseball series at Avista Stadium.
Bobby Carlson also had three hits for Gonzaga (20-10, 3-0), while Danny Meier had four for the Pilots (10-17, 0-3).
Clayton Mortensen picked up the win, allowing two runs in seven innings.
•Bryce Mooney threw 42/3 innings of one-hit relief to lead Washington to a 4-1 victory over UCLA (16-13, 1-2) in a Pac-10 game at Seattle.
Matt Stevens hit a two-run homer for the Huskies (20-11, 3-3) in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.
•Mike Marlow hit two home runs to lead Whitworth to a 16-6 victory over Whitman (0-24, 0-15) in a Northwest Conference game at Merkel Field.
Todd Phillips added a pair of hits for the Pirates (14-12, 8-4), who started the day with a 10-1 lead after rain suspended play in the second inning Saturday.
In Sunday’s nightcap, Steve Hare threw a three-hitter as the Pirates routed the Missionaries 11-0. Phillips and Nick Froman each had two RBIs.
•Chris Bozo (Ferris) hit a two-run double with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane to a 4-3 victory over Wenatchee Valley to open an NWAACC doubleheader in Wenatchee.
Mike Campo hit a home run on the first pitch of the nightcap, and the Sasquatch led wire-to-wire with another 4-3 win. A.J. Gosney (Central Valley) led Spokane with five hits in the doubleheader.
Softball
Jo Sonnett threw a five-hitter, and eight different Whitworth players had hits as the Pirates routed George Fox (1-19, 0-14) 11-2 in six innings to open a Northwest Conference doubleheader in Newberg, Ore.
In the nightcap, Heather Case and Sarah Froman each had three hits as the Pirates (14-8, 9-3) won 11-5 in six innings. Kristin Hanson added two hits, including a solo homer, for Whitworth.
Rowing
For the second time in three years, the Gonzaga men’s varsity crew won the Cal Cup Petite Final in the San Diego Crew Classic.
The Bulldogs finished in 6 minutes, 5.50 seconds, defeating second-place Washington State by over 3 seconds.
The WSU women’s varsity 8 finished third in the Whittier Cup Grand Final with a time of 6:57.83. California won in 6:52.10.
Golf
Washington State All-American Anastasia Kostina earned her ninth straight top-25 finish, placing 21st at the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. WSU finished tied for 13th of 16 teams.
•Gonzaga’s Lacey Jo Manwaring and Sarah Sheffield tied for 19th place at the Hoya Invitational in Leesburg, Va. The Bulldogs stayed in fifth place in the final round, and host Georgetown had the top team and individual scores.
•Washington’s Alex Prugh (Ferris) shot a final-round 73 to finish 19th at the Administaff Augusta State Invitational in Evans, Ga. The Huskies finished eighth of 15 teams.
