— Spokane County’s chief civil deputy prosecuting attorney, Jim Emacio, in an e-mail message discussing details of a potential sale of the Public Health Center, for which county officials later said no offer had been made.

“I missed the meeting where we were invited to come and bring our pet project.”

— Idaho state Sen. Brent Hill, R-Rexburg, protesting the expenditures being added to a funding bill known as the Strengthening Idaho Act of 2006.

“I had a son on that battlefield, and they were shooting at my son, and I’m not about to give this man who was captured in a war a full jury trial. I mean it’s crazy.”

— Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, telling an audience at the University of Frielberg in Switzerland that the U.S. Constitution does not guarantee a jury trial to foreigners captured during combat and held in an American detention facility.

“I can’t in good conscience put my client on the witness stand to defend against these allegations at this time, and I also don’t want to display the weakness of the case to the prosecution.”
