Cougars name four captains for 2006
Washington State seniors Jason Hill, Mkristo Bruce and Scott Davis, as well as junior quarterback Alex Brink, were named the 2006 Cougar football team captains by head coach Bill Doba this weekend.
Hill, a second team All-Pac-10 wide receiver, led WSU last season with 62 catches for 1,097 yards and a school-record 13 touchdowns. Bruce earned All-Pac-10 second team honors at defensive end, finishing tied for the league lead in tackles for loss (15) and second in sacks (10).
Davis has started every game at linebacker for the last two seasons, recording 66 tackles last year. Brink, a member of the Pac-10 All-Academic first team, threw for 2,997 yards and 24 touchdowns in his first full season as a starter.
Baseball
California catcher Garrett Bussiere drove in three runs, including a go-ahead, two-run homer in the fifth inning, to lead the Bears to a 6-4 victory over Washington State in a Pac-10 game in Pullman.
Travis Coulter and Jim Murphy had two hits apiece to lead Washington State (23-14, 5-7), while Bussiere was the only player with multiple hits for Cal (18-17, 6-6).
“Gonzaga’s West Coast Conference game with Saint Mary’s in Moraga, Calif., was postponed. The teams will play today at noon.
Golf
Washington junior Alex Prugh (Ferris High) finished in sixth place after the final round of the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif., was cancelled due to severe weather.
Prugh finished 2 over par to lead the Huskies, who finished in fourth place, five strokes behind UCLA. Ryan Witz finished tied for 23rd for Washington State, which finished in a tie for 12th in the 17-team field.
