Appleby leads Houston at halfway point

Stuart Appleby took a one-stroke lead over Greg Owen on Friday in the suspended second round of the Shell Houston Open in Humble, Texas, finishing 16 bogey-free holes in 5-under-par 67 to push his two-day total to 11 under.

A predawn storm dumped five-eighths of an inch of rain at The Tournament Course at Redstone, delaying the start of the second round 2 1/2 hours.

Owen teed off late in the afternoon and birdied five of his last seven holes for a 65.

•Jay Haas, seeking his first Champions Tour win of the season, breezed to a two-stroke lead in the first round of the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf in Savannah, Ga.

Haas shot a 6-under 66 at The Club at Savannah Harbor. Mark McNulty, Tom Wargo, Jerry Pate and Gil Morgan each shot 68s over the wind-swept, 7,087-yard island layout.

•Sung Ah Yim shot an 8-under 64 to grab a two-stroke lead in the Florida’s Natural Charity Championship in Stockbridge, Ga.

Yim pushed her two-round total to 12-under 132. Karrie Webb is two shots off the pace, along with Jee Young Lee and Hee-Won Han.

Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., and Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum both carded second-round 71s. Ward (140) is eight strokes back, while Hanson is 10.

•Michelle Wie has received a sponsor’s exemption to play in the 84 Lumber Classic, giving the 16-year-old three starts on the PGA Tour this year.

Horse racing

Velazquez out of Derby

John Velazquez will miss the Kentucky Derby with a broken shoulder blade and cracked ribs and could be out for as long as five months.

Velazquez, who suffered the injuries during a spill at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., was set to ride Bluegrass Cat in the Derby.

•Sur La Tete overcame heavy rain to easily win the Royal Chase for the Sport of Kings in Lexington, the second-richest steeplechase event.

Kansas finding released

The NCAA said Kansas “demonstrated a failure to exert appropriate institutional control” over a six-year period that led to dozens of violations in football and men’s and women’s basketball.

•SMU officials have offered the men’s basketball job to Florida Atlantic coach Matt Doherty, sources said.

Williams can be retried

A New Jersey appeals court ruled that former NBA star Jayson Williams can be retried on a reckless manslaughter charge in the shooting death of a limousine driver at the athlete’s mansion in 2002.

•Bill Dooley, who led three different football teams (North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest) to bowl games in a head coaching career that spanned 26 seasons, was in critical but stable condition in Durham, N.C., after surgery to repair an aneurysm, Duke University Hospital officials said.

•Kevin Harvick won his second consecutive Busch Series race, holding on through several late cautions and an overtime finish at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Ariz.
