Gonzaga takes series opener

North Central High grad Patrick Donovan allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings as Gonzaga defeated San Francisco 3-1 to open a three-game West Coast Conference baseball series Friday at Avista Stadium.

Darin Holcomb (Shadle Park) and Dustin Colclough each hit a home run and finished 2 for 4 for the Bulldogs (25-14, 6-4), who moved into a tie for second place with the Dons (24-17, 6-4).

•Washington State pounded a school-record 26 hits and scored its most runs since 1999 in a 22-7 rout of Northern Colorado to open a non-conference series in Greeley, Colo.

Mike Gilbert led the Cougars with four hits and added four RBIs and two runs scored. Jay Miller added three doubles, and Jared Prince, Ryan Krauser and Paul Gran also had three hits apiece for WSU, which had 13 players collect hits.

•Matt Lane hit a go-ahead, two-run double in a seven-run fifth inning to lead Washington (26-14, 5-5) to a 7-2 victory over No. 22 USC (22-17, 8-5) in a Pac-10 game in Los Angeles.

Softball

Tasia Dugan hit a leadoff home run in the top of the eighth inning, and Lacey Parry (Mead High) added insurance with her fourth hit of the day as Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Blue Mountain (7-22, 0-14) 6-3 to open an NWAACC doubleheader in Pendleton, Ore.

In the nightcap, Stephanie Day (Colville) threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts as the Sasquatch (20-7, 10-3) won a 15-0 rout in five innings.

•Devrie Downey had a pair of walkoff hits as Snow College swept North Idaho in a Scenic West doubleheader in Ephraim, Utah.

Downey won the opener 2-1 for the Badgers with a leadoff home run, Snow’s only hit, in the eighth inning. Kelcey Cavan and Melodee Mildenberger combined on a no-hitter through seven innings for the Cardinals.

In the nightcap, Downey brought home Amy Webb with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give Snow (18-23-1, 14-15) a 3-2 win.

Spring Montgomery (East Valley) had tied the game for NIC (28-15, 18-12) in the top half with a single to score Tracy Reed.

Tennis

The Gonzaga University men’s and women’s teams were both swept by top-seeded Pepperdine to open the West Coast Conference tournament.

The Gonzaga men fell to the second-ranked Waves 5-0 in Moraga, Calif., while the GU women (3-21) fell to its 13th-ranked counterparts 4-0 in Santa Clara, Calif. Neither team’s No. 1 and No. 6 singles players competed.

•The Whitworth men’s and women’s teams split their opening matches at the Northwest Conference Championships in Yakima, setting up today’s third-place matches.

The Pirates men defeated Puget Sound 5-2 in the first round before falling to top-seeded Pacific Lutheran 7-0 in the semifinals. Ben Works, Michael Carlson, Jeremiah Collins and Colin Storm (Mead High) won singles matches in the opener for Whitworth, which will face Linfield today.

The Pirates women beat Whitman 6-1 before falling to top-seeded Linfield 9-0. Jamie Kneese, Linh Aven, Taryn Smith and Chelsea Sweetin earned singles wins in the opener for the Pirates, who will face PLU.
