Arbor Day celebration at Finch
Spokane’s annual Arbor Day Celebration is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Finch Arboretum, 3404 W. 21st Ave. (at the intersection of F Street and Sunset Highway). Arbor Day activities are free and take place rain or shine.
Families can enjoy free displays, demonstrations and entertainment activities in addition to the usual tree planting,
The Corbin Art Center will host arts and crafts projects; the Idaho Forest Products Commission will give out free seedlings; and information on community gardens and recycling is also available.
Master composters can show you how to turn your yard and garden debris into a valuable soil amendment for your garden and reduce your garbage disposal. They will be on hand at various hands-on stations to help you get started and answer your questions.
You must be registered by 1:30 p.m. to complete all of the compost fair stations (takes about 45 minutes).
The composting event is free and open to all, but free compost bins are limited to Spokane County residents, with one bin per household. Bring identification that proves your residence. This biannual event is sponsored by the master composter volunteers of the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System.
West Central plans festival
West Central’s annual Neighbor Day Festival is from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at A.M. Cannon Park, 1900 W. Mission Ave. (between Belt and Elm).
The North Central High School Leadership students are planning a huge carnival with prizes, three bouncy castles, food, deejay music by Northern Lights, art projects with Spokane Art School, a vintage car show and face painting. There also will be a bake sale and arts and crafts.
If the weather is bad, the event will be held in the West Central Community Center, 1603 N. Belt St.
Balboa/South Indian Trail dump passes
Free dump passes valued at $25 each will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis for the Balboa/South Indian Trail Neighborhood from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at COPS Northwest at Shadle Center, 2215 W. Wellesley Ave., Suite D.
The passes are good through May 7. Bring a driver’s license and utility bill to show you live in the neighborhood.
The neighborhood boundaries are Francis Avenue to the south, the old landfill and Five Mile Rim to the north, Seven Mile Road to the west and Cedar Road to the east.

“The Whitman Neighborhood Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Whitman Elementary School, 5400 N. Helena St.
“Neva-Wood COPS will meet at 6:30 p.m. next Thursday at 4705 N. Addison St. Refreshments provided. Parking is across the street to the east at the Zion Church.
