Bonds hits No. 711
Barry Bonds hit a tying pinch-hit two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning – the 711th of his career – to force extra innings in San Francisco’s 9-7 loss to the New York Mets.
The slugger sent a 2-1 pitch from Billy Wagner into the seats in left-center for his third homer of the year and second in as many games.
It was Bonds’ fourth career pinch-hit homer and first career homer against Wagner, who became the 418th pitcher to surrender a homer to Bonds — and blew his second save in the process. Bonds hadn’t had a pinch-hit homer since Aug. 23, 2001, at Montreal.
Twins’, N.Y. stadiums get votes
The Minnesota House gave the Twins stadium hopes a big lift Wednesday, voting 76-55 in favor of an open-air ballpark that would be paid for mostly by taxpayers.
The focus shifts to the state Senate, where the proposed increase in the county’s sales tax could run into some early trouble. The Senate Taxes Committee, headed by a lawmaker opposed to the plan, will begin its deliberations today.
•New ballparks for the Yankees and Mets passed a financing hurdle when the New York City Council approved their payment plans.
The Yankees ballpark, planned to open in 2009 next to its current home in the Bronx, is expected to cost more than $1 billion, with the city and state providing more than $200 million. The Mets stadium, to be built on what is now part of the parking lot of Shea Stadium in Queens, is predicted to cost about $800 million, of which the city and state will contribute about $165 million.
