Organizations will be cited for service
Educational Service District 101 will honor five organizations today for their community service. The 3:15 p.m. ceremony will be at 8120 E. Broadway Ave., the site of an Inland Empire Residential Resources affordable housing project being developed by ESD 101’s Spokane service team.
The service team is funded primarily from a grant through the Washington Commission for National and Community Service. The program trains young people in the construction of affordable housing for at-risk populations.
After training, participants embark on careers in construction trades. Service team activities are typically undertaken in partnership with local nonprofits and other organizations donating cash and/or volunteer assistance.
The five organizations to be honored include: Foundation Northwest, Avista Foundation, America West Bank, Spokane Home Builders Association and the Washington Commission for National and Community Service.
Cheney director honored
Harlan Henderson, choral director at Cheney High School, was named Outstanding Music Educator of the Year by the Northeast Region of the Washington Music Educators Association.
Henderson received the award at the WMEA all-state music convention in February, where he was the group manager of the symphonic choir.
Henderson also was honored by his choir. The 50-plus member choir signed a letter nominating him for the KXLY Channel 4 News Yard Makeover. On April 19, at a gathering of the entire student body, it was announced that he was selected for the makeover.
Henderson will retire next spring after more than 30 years of teaching.
Concert with a Catch
The Ferris High School music students will present Concert With a Catch at 7 p.m. next Thursday in the school’s Paul Brueggemeier Auditorium, 3020 E. 37th Ave.
This concert was inspired by the Anti-Contest Concert created in 2001 by violinist Karen Iglitzin, director of Chamber Music Madness, a nonprofit organization based in Seattle, www.chambermusicmadness.org.
The concert may appear to have the usual trappings and musical quality of a typical classical music concert, but the performance also includes costumes, bribery and prizes.
Each small ensemble will attempt to impress the judges with its musicality, creativity, costumes and originality. Eckart Preu, Morihiko Nakahara, Catherine Shipley and Verne Windham will judge the performances.
The concert is free and open to the public.
Community safety forum
The Community Safety Partnership will hold its second forum from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Rogers High School, 1622 E. Wellesley Ave.
The community is invited to hear presentations from experts on drugs, gangs, Internet predators, identity theft and fire prevention. Residents will be able to talk with specialists at community information booths and visit with school, police and Fire Department representatives.

The event gives area high school juniors and seniors a chance to hone their interview skills, be referred to a potential employer or be offered a job.
Employers and community members are invited. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to talk to two or three students, and interview questions will be available for those who would like them.
