March to call attention to children in Uganda
A few months ago, in Claire Anderson’s mind, Uganda was simply a country that was facing hardship.
Now, after interning at the Human Rights Education Institute in Coeur d’Alene, Anderson has become outspoken about children there who are abducted and forced into combat and slavery.
“It really scared me that something this horrible could be hidden so well for so long,” said Anderson, a senior at Coeur d’Alene High School.
To call attention to the situation, Anderson and other students will march in downtown Coeur d’Alene from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, starting at the Human Rights Center, 414½ Mullan Road.
Afterward at the center, the institute will show a documentary about Uganda, “Invisible Children: Discover the Unseen,” and host a talk by North Idaho College history professor Sharla Chittick. The event is part of an effort that spans 150 cities around the world.

Race incorporates skis, boards and bikes
Competitors will ski or snowboard, mountain bike and run Saturday in the Silver Valley Leadman triathlon at Silver Mountain Resort.
More than $3,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs in what sponsors call “every man’s Ironman.”
“It’s more about having fun in the mountains and not supercompetitive,” event organizer Karey Scholey said.
The Leadman provides a new spin on the traditional triathlon.
Beginning at the top of Silver Mountain’s Chair 2, competitors hit the slopes to ski or board their way down Centennial to the bike exchange point, where the 14-mile mountain bike leg takes them down Crescent Road to Big Creek and on to the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes. Here, the final leg is a four-mile run back on the trail to Gondola Village at Silver Mountain.
Named in honor of the Silver Valley’s historic mining past, the Leadman also marks the end of the winter recreation season.
Proceeds from the event will help the Kellogg Rotary Club establish a historic mining monument. For more information, go to www.skisilver.com or call (800) 204-6428.
