Clausen lands bid

Luke Clausen of Spokane advanced to the semifinal round of fishing’s FLW Tour Championship at Logan Martin Lake in Alabama with a two-day total of 26 pounds, 10 ounces.

Clausen bested Tom Monsor’s total of 20 pounds, 1 ounce.

Clausen will be matched up against Shinichi Fukae today in the 24-angler semifinals. The top 12 then advance to Saturday’s final round. The tournament has a total cash purse of $1.5 million.

Clausen was the winner of the 2006 Bassmaster Classic.

Hockey

Spokane Chiefs defenseman Sean Zimmerman, 19, of Spokane, has been invited to the U.S. National Junior (Under-20) Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y.

The camp begins Saturday and runs through Aug. 14. Those selected from the camp will play for the U.S. team that will compete in the World U-20 championships, Dec. 26 through Jan. 5 in Sweden.

Volleyball

Gonzaga is picked to finished seventh in the West Coast Conference race this year with Santa Clara the favorite according to the conference’s preseason poll.

Pepperdine is picked second, followed by San Diego, Saint Mary’s, Loyola Marymount, San Francisco, GU and Portland.
