Boise blanks Spokane to retain first place

BOISE – The Spokane Indians are doing their part to keep the Boise Hawks in first place.

Fabian Jimenez Angulo (1-0) pitched six innings of three-hit ball and Russell Canzler hit a two-run homer Tuesday night as Boise defeated Spokane 6-0 to open a three-game Northwest League series at Memorial Stadium.

East Division-leading Boise (26-23) is 4-0 against the Indians (19-30) this season.

Angulo and Jeremy Papelbon, who pitched the final two innings, limited Spokane to four hits.

Kasey Kiker (0-4) took the loss, allowing five hits and three earned runs in four innings. Boise took a 2-0 lead off Kiker in the third on sacrifice flies by Tyler Colvin and Joshua Lansford.

Spokane plays its next seven games on the road.

Davis honored

Indians outfielder Chris Davis was named the Texas Rangers’ minor league player of July.

Davis, selected in the fifth round out of Navarro (Texas) College, hit .343 during the month, with 10 homers, 11 doubles and 25 RBIs.
