City Council approves contract for sewer repair in West Central

Storm damage to one of Spokane’s sewer overflow pipes in the West Central Neighborhood is going to be repaired under a $65,160 contract with Eller Corp.

The Spokane City Council approved the contract Monday night. It involves repairing approximately 300 feet of 90-year-old pipe in the vicinity of Summit Boulevard and Sherwood Street.

Three contractors were contacted about the job, but only Eller Corp. responded with a bid, according to city documents.

The company plans to install new 12-inch polyvinyl pipe and to protect the line with 1,000 cubic yards of large rocks. The job also involves removal and replacement of a guardrail as well as erosion control.

The council Monday also approved an emergency ordinance providing for eminent domain action against two parcels of land in east Spokane. The city is planning to realign Broadway Avenue where it meets Freya Street to allow for construction of a new, longer Freya Street Bridge across railroad tracks to the north.

The project includes using portions of two lots at Alki Avenue and Sycamore Street.

The property is occupied by Industrial Systems and Fabrication Inc. of Spokane.

In other action, the council approved two street vacations, which transfers public rights of way to adjacent owners at the requests of the property owners.

One involves the vacation of Lacey Street from Gordon Avenue to 620 feet to the south of Gordon to allow for future development at Hollister-Stier Laboratories.

The other vacation is for the south seven feet of Riverside Avenue from 50 feet east of Napa Street to 12 east of the west line of Crestline Street and the west 12 feet of Crestline Street from seven feet north of the south line of Riverside Avenue to the north line of the alley south of Riverside Avenue.

The request by Mike Van Dinter was to allow for property development.
