Davenport takes defeat in return from layoff

Lindsay Davenport’s comeback ended with a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3 loss to Australian Samantha Stosur in the JPMorgan Chase Open in Carson, Calif., on Wednesday.

Out since March because of a back injury, Davenport battled her errors and lack of fitness in her first tournament since Indian Wells.

“Fifth-seeded James Blake and seventh-seeded Tommy Robredo both lost in the second round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto, leaving only three of the top 10 seeds.

Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony had no swelling or pain and was walking normally, one day after hyperextending his knee while playing for the U.S. national team in Guangzhou, China.

Bruins’ Sinden resigns

Harry Sinden, president of the Boston Bruins for the last 17 years resigned to become an adviser to club owner Jeremy Jacobs.

The move is the latest in the reorganization of a franchise that last won the Stanley Cup in 1972.

“The Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes will play the Buffalo Sabres as part of an Oct. 4 opening night doubleheader on the channel formerly know as OLN. The station will change its name to Versus on Sept. 25.

Evridge leaves Kansas

Former starting quarterback Allan Evridge has decided to transfer from Kansas State less than a week into fall practice.

This makes Evridge the third Wildcats quarterback to depart Manhattan since the spring game in April.

“USC receiver Dwayne Jarrett will not miss a game for failing to pay full rent on an apartment he shared with Matt Leinart after the NCAA reinstated the All-American’s eligibility.

Voigt rides to victory

Jens Voigt won the Tour of Germany, while Graeme Brown of Australia took the final stage in Karlsruhe, Germany.

“Steve Monks, the chairman of the Durham County Republican Party in North Carolina said he would launch a write-in campaign against the district attorney prosecuting three Duke University lacrosse players charged with rape.

“Racing veterans Al Unser Sr. and Bobby Unser were arrested after sheriff’s deputies said the brothers ignored orders to leave an area where authorities had cornered a carjacking suspect in Albuquerque, N.M. Deputies said Al Unser Sr. started to go through the roadblock to get home when deputies warned him to stop. Bobby Unser, who was in a separate vehicle, also refused to leave.
