Mormon Church marks 100 years in area
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is celebrating a century in Spokane on Saturday at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center, 404 N. Havana St.
The doors open at 4 p.m. for children’s activities, entertainment and more.
A special program including guest speakers will begin at 7 p.m. in the grandstands, and at 9 p.m. there will be a dance.
Everyone attending should bring their own food and water.

‘Encountering the World of Islam’
Fourth Memorial Church, 2000 N. Standard St., is offering a 12-week course on Islam intended for evangelical Christians.
The classes will be held Sundays from Sept. 10 to Dec. 3 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the church. Every lesson will be taught by a different instructor.
Some topics will be the history of Islam and dispelling Western myths that surround the religion.
Early registration for the class will end Aug. 18. Anyone who calls before then will receive a discount on the class tuition and study book.

Concerts
“Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 8441 N. Indian Trail Road, is presenting the Cary Fly Band on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The concert will be on the church grounds and will include a visit from the Inland Northwest Blood Bank bloodmobile.
The Cary Fly Band plays a blend of country, rock and blues.
Audience members are advised to bring a blanket or chair and their own snacks.

“Mt. Spokane Church, 6311 E. Mount Spokane Park Drive, is presenting Denver & the Mile High Orchestra on Wednesday. The band, which includes a 15-piece orchestra, plays big band music.
The gates will open at 6 p.m., and the concert will begin at 7 p.m.
A concession stand will sell hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages chips and soft drinks.
The cost of the concert is a $5 donation.

Movie night
Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2715 S. Ray St., is presenting outdoor movies today, next Thursday A and Aug. 24.
The movies start at dusk, and anyone attending is advised to bring blankets or lawn chairs.
The movies will start with a cartoon. and there will be a different family-friendly movie shown every week.

Garage sale
Covenant United Methodist Church is presenting a garage sale to benefit its sister church of Buenas Nuevas Lutheran Church in El Paisnal, El Salvador.
The money will be used for 50 scholarships at the church.
The sale will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 317 E. Silver Pines Court, Spokane.

Special services
“The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., is celebrating Anglo-Catholic Mass Sunday at 4 p.m.
The service, held in observation of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, will be sung by the St. John’s Schola, which will be accompanied by organist Philip Moore.
Before the service, the cathedral will be open for tours from 1 to 4 p.m.

“Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., is celebrating the Feast of the Dormition of Our Most Holy Lady.
The church is presenting Great Vespers on Monday at 7 p.m., Orthros, Tuesday at 9 a.m., and Divine Liturgy on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
There also will be a Paraklesis to the Theotokos (Mother of God) service Friday at 7 p.m.
This service is chanted during the first 14 days of August and also during times of distress or sorrow.

Vacation Bible school
“Christian Life Church, 14011 N. Little Spokane Drive, is inviting kids in kindergarten through the sixth grade to “Jesus Is My Super Hero,” a vacation Bible school Monday through Aug. 18 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Children will learn Bible stories and enjoy crafts, games, music and snacks.

Children in preschool through the third grade are invited to attend from 9:30 a.m. to noon to visit a Mayan jungle, a medieval castle, a Native American village, an ancient laboratory and a Hawaiian volcano on a quest for God’s Ten Commandments.
Students in fourth grade and older are invited to be helpers.
After vacation Bible school, the children in fourth grade and older are invited to attend art camp from 1 to 3 p.m.
If children help out during morning classes, they should bring a sack lunch.

Christian singles
Spokane Christian Singles is offering speed dating Saturday at 7 p.m. for those in their 20s through 40s.
There will be another session for those older than 45 Sunday at 3 p.m.
Both sessions will be at Mission Community Presbyterian Church, 2103 E. Mission Ave. First-time speed daters will be admitted for $10, and returners will be admitted for $7.
