Hertz, Holcomb honored
The Spokane RiverHawks swept the top prizes in West Coast Collegiate Baseball League honors. Steve Hertz was chosen Coach of the Year after leading the team to the regular-season title, while third baseman Darin Holcomb was chosen Most Valuable Player.
The RiverHawks finished with a 28-16 record, but lost the championship series to the Wenatchee AppleSox.
Holcomb hit .324 and led the league in doubles, homers, RBIs, total bases and slugging percentage. He was joined on the all-league first team by four teammates: pitchers Cory Powell and Jeremy Hefner, and outfielders Brent Mertens and Carl Uhl.
First baseman Chase Powell, outfielder Paul Martin and pitcher Luke Farden were second-team picks, while shortstop Greg Biagi and reliever Josh Williamson received honorable mention to round out the RiverHawks’ honors.
Volleyball
Sacramento State tops the Big Sky coaches’ preseason poll, followed by Eastern Washington, Portland State, Montana State, Weber State, Idaho State, Montana, North Colorado and Northern Arizona.
•Puget Sound has been picked to win the Northwest League title in the coaches’ preseason poll. Linfield is tabbed for second, followed by Pacific Lutheran, Whitman, Whitworth, George Fox, Lewis & Clark, Pacific and Willamette.
Outdoors
The Lake Washington sockeye salmon fishery has been extended through Tuesday, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced. The extension will add two more days of fishing to the season.
•The fishery in the Strait of Juan de Fuca between Ediz Hook and the mouth of the Sekiu River will close to retention of chinook salmon, effective Tuesday, the WDFW announced.
