Jordin to be free during appeal
Convicted rapist Arlin Jordin has been approved to live free until the state Court of Appeals decides his case, which typically takes about a year, a deputy prosecutor said Friday.
The 59-year-old former insurance executive and apartment landlord was convicted May 11 of second-degree rape and indecent liberties.
On Wednesday, Superior Court Judge Neal Rielly agreed with Jordin’s attorney, Bevan Maxey, to release Jordin on a $100,000 bond, with conditions, as he waits for his appeal to be heard, Deputy Prosecutor John Love said.
Jordin was attempting Friday to use his parents’ home as collateral to post the bond, said Love, who acknowledged that it’s rare for convicts to ask for a bond while waiting for appeal. Most convicts have already spent all available money on their defense, Love said.
“The statute allows for (a bond while waiting for appeal) for everything except capital murder,” Love said.
If Jordin posts the bond, which is expected early next week, he would be subjected to GPS monitoring. He would not be allowed to have contact with the victim or witnesses, and he cannot go into any business that serves alcohol, Love said.
Jordin would also face a curfew requiring him to remain home between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. and would be told not to possess or consume alcohol, Love said. Jordin must also surrender his passport.
At his sentencing last month, Jordin maintained his innocence in connection with the 2004 rape of a woman. She told police that she blacked out after accepting drinks from Jordin, and she believes that she was drugged.
After his arrest, more than 50 women came forward to Spokane police. In addition to the victim, court documents say, police identified eight other women who reported being raped and drugged by Jordin, and seven other women who believed they were given drug-laced drinks by him.
At his two-week trial, three of those women testified as prosecution witnesses to show a common scheme or plan. They told the jury they had similar individual experiences after accepting drinks from Jordin at his apartment in West Spokane.
