Volcanoes continue domination

The Spokesman-Review

KEIZER, Ore. – The Spokane Indians can’t seem to figure out how to beat Salem-Keizer.

The Volcanoes beat the Indians for the fourth consecutive time on Monday, a 6-4 outcome. It was Spokane’s seventh straight loss overall, and the Indians are 0-9 against Salem-Keizer this season.

Ryan Rohlinger’s three-run homer in the seventh gave the Volcanoes the lead for good.

The Volcanoes, (37-17), first in the Northwest League West Division, scored twice in the bottom of the second and once in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Spokane (19-35) responded with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the sixth inning, the Indians took the lead for the first time in the series.

With two outs and nobody on base, Jay Heafner singled and advanced to third on Joey Hooft’s single. Hooft advanced to second on the throw from the outfield.

Joe Napoli was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Wally Backman, who drove in Heafner with a single. Hooft scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Eric Stolp to put Spokane ahead 4-3.

The Indians wrap up the five-game series against Salem-Keizer tonight at 6:35. They are off Wednesday and return to Spokane on Thursday for an eight-game homestand.
