ESD 101
Group seeks service project participants
Education Service District 101 is looking for individuals to participate in a pair of public service projects in the Spokane area.
The first is ESD’s Spokane Service Team, an AmeriCorps national service program for 18- to 25-year-olds. The SST melds public service with job training. Participants learn all aspects of the construction trade while building homes for low-income families and completing capital improvement projects for local nonprofit organizations.
The second opportunity is through the Washington Reading Corps, another AmeriCorps program open to adults of all ages. Participants provide tutoring to students reading below grade level in local elementary schools.
An information session will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at 4202 S. Regal St. For more information, contact Manda Edwards at 535-1613 or medwards@esd101.net.
Public safety
Drug prevention fair planned
A drug- and gang-prevention fair for landlords will be Sept. 14 at the East Central Community Center.
The fair, intended to help landlords keep drugs and gangs out of apartment units, is free to the public. Sponsors include local law enforcement, the Inland Empire Rental Association and Spokane Community Oriented Policing Services and, in Spokane Valley, the Edgecliff Weed and Seed program.
Edgecliff SCOPE is giving local landlords a heads up about the fair, especially landlords with six or fewer properties. The fair is seen as a good way for duplex owners, or even owners of condominiums who sublet, to keep their properties free of drugs and gang-related crime.
The fair gets under way at 3 p.m. Sept. 14 at 500 S. Stone St. Discussion topics include tenant screening, landlord-tenant law, fair housing and drugs and gangs.
