Monday’s results
Yankees 2, Red Sox 1: At Boston, New York completed a five-game sweep, beating the Red Sox behind six shutout innings by Cory Lidle and extending their A.L. East lead to a season-high 6 1/2 games over Boston. Bobby Abreu, who came to the Yankees along with Lidle, broke a scoreless tie with an RBI double in the sixth inning.
Tigers 7, White Sox 1: At Detroit, in the opener of a possibly pivotal four-game series in the A.L. Central, Justin Verlander gave up one run over seven innings in a victory over Chicago. Backed by Craig Monroe’s two-run homer and Sean Casey’s three RBIs, the Tigers beat the White Sox for just the fourth time in 13 games this season.
Devil Rays 4, Rangers 3: At St. Petersburg, Fla., James Shields won consecutive starts for the first time since mid-June, and Russell Branyan hit a tiebreaking single in the fifth inning that led Tampa Bay over Texas. Hank Blalock homered and had three RBIs for the Rangers, whose three-game winning streak was stopped.
Athletics 12, Blue Jays 10: At Toronto, Bobby Kielty homered and drove in four runs as A.L. West-leading Oakland beat the Blue Jays. Dan Haren won his sixth straight start and set an Oakland record by getting the victory despite allowing nine runs. He gave up 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
