Writer to speak on Catholic tradition

Kathleen Maas Weigert, executive director of Georgetown University’s Center for Social Justice, will be the opening speaker at this year’s Catholicism for a New Millennium series at Gonzaga University.

Weigert’s lecture, titled after her book, “Loving the Catholic Social Tradition,” is tonight at 7:30.

An internationally acclaimed speaker, Weigert’s other books include “America’s Working Poor,” “The Search for the Common Ground Among Catholics” and “Teaching for Justice.” She received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in international relations from the University of Minnesota and earned a doctorate in sociology from the University of Notre Dame.

Before accepting a position at Georgetown in January 2001, Weigert was the associate director at Notre Dame for academic affairs and research. Throughout her career, she has lectured, headed workshops and taught on topics such as experiential and service learning education, nonviolence, and education for justice and peace.

All lectures are free, open to the public and held in the Cataldo Globe Room. All begin at 7:30 p.m.
