Gerald Ford has angioplasty

The Spokesman-Review

Former President Ford underwent his second heart procedure in a week at the Mayo Clinic when stents were placed into two of his coronary arteries to increase blood flow, his spokeswoman said Friday.

The angioplasty procedure on the 93-year-old Ford was successful and he was resting comfortably in his room at the hospital in Rochester, spokeswoman Penny Circle said in a statement. About 600,000 angioplasties are done each year in the United States alone.

On Monday, doctors at the clinic had fitted Ford with an implantable cardiac pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat.

Coors pleads to lesser charge

Beer executive Pete Coors pleaded guilty Friday to driving while impaired, a lesser charge than the DUI count filed against him after his May arrest, and was sentenced to 24 hours of community service.

The judge suspended a $200 fine, but ordered Coors to participate on a panel sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and to go through alcohol education courses. Coors’ driver’s license also was suspended for three months from the date of his arrest, and he must pay $495 in court costs and fees.

District attorney’s spokeswoman Pam Russell said it was typical to dismiss the drunken driving charge for the lesser charge when defendants, like Coors, have no previous arrests.

Coors, 59, vice chairman and a director of Molson Coors Brewing Co., was pulled over by a state trooper May 28 after he left a friend’s wedding celebration.

Company spokeswoman Kabira Hatland has said Coors rolled through a stop sign a block from his Golden home and was stopped by the officer in his driveway. She said his blood-alcohol content after a breath test was 0.088 percent, above the 0.08 percent level at which a motorist is considered to be driving under the influence.

Victoria’s Secret employee killed

A man shot and killed a Victoria’s Secret employee in a mall Friday evening, and an off-duty police officer fatally shot him in the parking lot as he tried to escape, officials said.

Sherika Broussard, 21, was shot in the head in the store at the Mall of Acadiana, said Cpl. Mark Francis, a Lafayette Police Department spokesman.

“It appears to be a domestic-related incident,” Francis said. He did not know the gunman’s name.

Mall security guards and off-duty officers working for the mall heard the shots and were running toward the area while store employees were calling police, he said.

“They confronted the guy in the parking lot,” Francis said. “He was just about to get to his vehicle. He turned on the officers with the weapon pointed toward them.”

Detective Dustin Firmin, who was working an off-duty security job, shot the man, Francis said.
