Local shooters second at state tournament

Led by J.R. Snodgrass, the “Hot Shot” youth shooting team representing Landt Farms Sporting Clays finished second at the Washington State Sporting Clays Championships, held Aug. 17-20 in Sumner, Wash.

Snodgrass, 14, finished first in his class in the 200 targets Main Event and first in the 100 targets Preliminary Event. He also took third in the 28-Gauge and tied for fourth in the 5-Stand Event.

Snodgrass’ teammate Bryce Purdy, 11, finished second in his class in the 20-Gauge, 28-Gauge and 410-Bore Events. He was fourth in the 200 targets Main Event and tied for fourth in the 5-Stand. Viktor Henkle, 13, and Dean Flager, 15, were also part of the Landt Farms team.

Golf

After tying for the second lowest qualifying-round score with a 73, Spokane’s Chessey Thomas, 14, advanced to the semifinals of the championship flight before losing to eventual champion Monika Graf of East Wenatchee 4 and 3 at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Junior Amateur Championships at Mt. Si Golf Course in Snoqualmie, Wash., Aug. 21-24.

Spokane’s Lauren Howell advanced to the final round where she lost to Katie Somers of North Bend 2 and 1 in the fifth flight.

Brittany Wilcox of Spokane also competed at this tournament after qualifying with a score of 78 on Aug. 21.

On the boy’s side, Spokane’s Ryan Jones, Justin Haase and Nick Castrolang all qualified but did not make it to the championship round.

Tennis

The United States Tennis Association Junior Sectional Championships were held Aug. 24-27 at the Yakima Tennis Club in Yakima, Wash., and the Spokane area was well represented.

Spokane’s Ben Gullickson beat Dimitri Anast of Beaverton, Ore. 6-3, 7-5 in the Round of 16 before losing to Mark Shkrebtan of Redmond, Wash. 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

Whitman Hough of Spokane defeated Bryan Thorp of Kent, Wash. 6-4, 6-1 in the Round of 16 and then beat Tacoma’s Paul Namkoong 4-6, 7-6 (2), 10-3 in the quarterfinals. He then lost to Filipp Pogostkin of Bellevue 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Hayden Lake’s Sam Lyons defeated Christopher Erbin of West Linn, Ore. 6-2, 6-4 in the Round of 32 and then lost to Olympia’s Andrew Blackner 6-2, 7-6 in the Round of 16.

On the girl’s side, Katie Griffith of Spokane defeated Molly Maguire of Lake Oswego, Ore. 6-0, 6-2 in the Round of 16. She advanced to the quarterfinals where she lost to Yakima’s Alexis Filliol 6-4, 6-0.

Spokane’s Audrionna Farr defeated Portland’s Anastasia Hueffner 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before losing to Belinda Niu of Portland 4-6, 6-3, 10-3.
