Fake trees real deal for many
Although growers’ groups point out that biodegradable cut trees are a better choice for the environment, artificial trees remain popular. The National Christmas Tree Association says 9.3 million artificial trees were purchased last year, for an average price of $72.20.
Some artificial trees now have molded, polyethylene needles on the outside that are softer and more realistic than trees made entirely from polyvinylchloride, according to Dean Darin, the buyer for Christmas trees and lights for English Gardens stores in Michigan. Trees with PE tips have PVC needles on the interior. They are about 25 percent more expensive than all-PVC trees, Darin says. Artificial trees are made from petroleum-based materials.
This year, white trees are big since ornaments show up well on them.
