Tigers hold off Bullpups

Lewis and Clark built a quick 15-point lead at Gonzaga Prep in Greater Spokane League girls basketball Tuesday night, but the 69-54 victory wasn’t that cut and dried.

While the Tigers’ early pressure made things look easy, the Bullpups cut the seemingly formidable 16-1 lead to 23-21 in the second quarter.

They made a game of it until a pair of 3-pointers by Lyndi Seidensticker propelled LC to a fourth-quarter getaway.

“We just kind of got out of our flow and never got it back,” said Tigers coach Jim Redmon. “And we have to stop fouling.”

That was about the only thing LC (3-0) did wrong in the game’s first 5 1/2 minutes.

The Bullpups (1-1) didn’t make their lone basket of the first quarter until Redmon took out all his starters with 2:26 left to play.

“Young, inexperienced, almost all of them have never played in a big pressure game and that’s how they reacted,” said coach Mike Arte of the Bullpups’ slow start.

LC had committed nine fouls by the end of the first quarter. When LC’s starters returned, they had trouble regaining rhythm and it became a game.

Six LC players helped push the lead back to eight points, including leading scorers Seidensticker – who had eight points in the second quarter and 18 for the game – and Katelan Redmon – who finished the night with 16.

Redmon scored three baskets in the third quarter to push LC’s lead to 44-33 and the team went on a 16-4 run thereafter on Seidensticker’s baskets to make a 60-41 getaway with 4 minutes left.

G-Prep veteran Tara Cronin scored 13 of her team high 18 points in the second half.

East Valley 53, Central Valley 45: With the game tied at 22, the visiting Knights (2-0) went on a 14-0 run and beat the Bears (0-3) for the first time since December 1975. Ashley Grater led EV with 16 points.

Ferris 50, Mt. Spokane 37: The visiting Saxons (2-1) stormed to a 34-11 first-half lead as the Wildcats (0-2) shot 3 for 27 from the field. Mt. Spokane’s Sam Patrick scored her 10 points in the second half.

Mead 79, North Central 31: Panthers freshman Jazmine Redmon scored 16 points and had five steals as Mead (3-0) took a 26-7 lead after a quarter. Alicia Kahler scored 11 for the Indians (0-3).

University 54, Shadle Park 29: Angie Bjorklund scored 28 points and had 15 rebounds in the Titans’ (2-1) win at home over the Highlanders (1-1).

Shadle Park 52, University 50: The Titans (0-3) nearly pulled off the night’s shocker against the visiting Highlanders (2-0). They missed two shots, one that rimmed out with 15 seconds left and another that missed at the buzzer. Titans junior post Ryan Dixon had a career-high 21 points and another junior, Zack Humphrey, paced the Highlanders with 20.

Gonzaga Prep 54, Lewis and Clark 48: The key for the host Bullpups (1-1) in a back-and-forth game came with time expiring in the first half. Trailing the Tigers (1-2), they scored, stole the inbounds pass and scored again for a 25-23 lead. Beau Azadganian finished with 15 points and sophomore Travis Long added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Mead 57, North Central 53: The host Panthers (2-1) were tied 53-all against the Indians (2-1) with 32 seconds remaining. Steals by Mike Shriver, who made two free throws, and Desmond Seay clinched the victory. Brendan Ingebritsen led Mead with 23 points. NC’s Nick Rijon scored 18.

Ferris 48, Mt. Spokane 37: Defensive pressure by the Saxons (3-0) in the third quarter produced a 13-4 scoring burst that overcame the deliberate Wildcats (1-1) at Mt. Spokane.

Central Valley 66, East Valley 44: Seniors Kevin Cameron and Nick Ambrose scored 19 points apiece for the Bears (1-2) to beat the visiting Knights (0-2).
