Cardinals down Lady Toppers

Angel McCoughtry scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Saturday to lead No. 17 Louisville to a 70-58 win over Western Kentucky.

Yuliya Tokova had 13 points and nine rebounds and Patrika Barlow added 11 points, six rebounds and four assists as Louisville (9-0) took control early then held off a second-half surge by the Lady Toppers (5-3).

Western Kentucky’s Crystal Kelly battled foul trouble in the first half but finished with 20 points. The Lady Toppers, however, made just 4 of 27 shots from 3-point range and shot 32 percent from the floor on the game.

Louisville won despite committing 21 turnovers – the third straight game the Cardinals have given the ball away at least 20 times.

(19) Rutgers 76, Princeton 51: At Piscataway, N.J., Kia Vaughn was 12 of 16 from the field and finished with a career-high 27 points to lead the Scarlet Knights (3-4) to a victory over the Tigers (3-6).

Epiphanny Prince added 19 points and Matee Ajavon had 14 for Rutgers, which hit 52.5 percent of its shots and outrebounded Princeton 34-26.

Meagan Cowher had 16 points for the Tigers.

(20) Michigan St. 58, Hartford 45: At Auburn Hills, Mich., Aisha Jefferson scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds in the Spartans (7-1) win over the Hawks (7-4).

Rene Haynes had nine points and six steals for Michigan State.

Danielle Hood and Ikea Witt each scored 12 points for Hartford, who shot just 23.3 percent from the field after halftime.

Neither team could find the range beyond the arc, with Hartford 1 for 18 from 3-point range and Michigan State 0 for 12.

(23) New Mexico 72, UCLA 63: At Albuquerque, N.M., Dionne Marsh scored 21 points, Julie Briody added 17 and the Lobos (8-2) overcame a 10-point, first-half deficit to beat the Bruins (6-5) in the championship game of the Southwest Airlines Shootout.

The win was the seventh straight for the Lobos. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak by the Bruins.

Lindsey Plummer led the Bruins with 22 points. Noelle Quinn added 15.

(24) Marquette 64, Oakland (Mich.) 51: At Rochester, Mich., Krystal Ellis scored 17 points and the Golden Eagles (9-1) played suffocating defense in a victory over the Golden Grizzlies (4-5).

The Golden Eagles won their eighth straight and gave coach Terri Mitchell her 200th victory in 11 years at the school. Marquette held the Golden Grizzlies to 31 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded them 49-29.

Christina Quaye added 13 points for Marquette, while Danielle Kamm had 11.

(25) Nebraska 87, Michigan 47: At Lincoln, Neb., Kelsey Griffin racked up 11 points in the first half and Chelsea Aubry added 10 in the first 20 minutes as the Cornhuskers (7-2) opened up an early lead and went on to defeat the Wolverines (6-5).

Nebraska forced 15 Michigan turnovers in the first half, turning them into 17 points.

Nebraska’s largest lead was the final margin of 40.

Aubry finished with 18 points. Corey Montgomery added 14. Janelle Cooper led the Wolverines with 13 points.
