Washington women recover to defeat GU
Cameo Hicks scored 17 points Friday night to help Washington beat Gonzaga 75-61 in a non-conference women’s basketball game at Seattle.
Hicks scored 10 or more points for the ninth time in 10 games. Emily Florence had a career-high five steals, six rebounds, six points and three assists for the Huskies (6-4).
Michelle Elliot had 14 points for the Bulldogs (7-6). Heather Bowman, a 6-foot-2 freshman from Lewis and Clark coming off a 32-point outing, had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Washington’s matchup zone defense was so stifling that Gonzaga only shot 39 percent, and the Huskies had several transition baskets off 14 steals.
Washington jumped out to a 30-13 lead while making 12 of its first 19 shots, but didn’t have a field goal the final 7:05 of the first half and GU went on a 13-6 run.
The Bulldogs scored on four consecutive possessions to cut the deficit to nine before the Huskies went on a 7-0 run to seal the win with 4 minutes left.
Washington moved to 5-0 at home this year.
“Eastern Washington snapped a six-game losing streak with a 71-67 victory over Northwestern State in a non-conference game at Cheney.
Phynique Allen scored the first 11 points for the Eagles (4-6) with a trio of 3-pointers and a layup. She finished the game with 16 points. Brittney Osborn led Eastern with 17 points and Sydney Benson chipped in 14 points and 13 rebounds.
After the Eagles built a 12-point lead in the second half, Northwestern State (4-5) used a 14-5 run to tie the score at 61 with 3:34 left. Eastern broke the tie with six straight points and held on for the win.
Tena Matthews paced the Demons with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
“Four players topped 10 points and CC Spokane moved into the championship game of their NWAACC Crossover Tournament bracket with a 76-49 win over Whatcom at Spokane Falls Community College.
Shantel Haugen (North Central) led the Sasquatch (8-3) with 14 points. Kellee Neal and Emily Wittkopf (Mt. Spokane) each chipped in 12 and Liz Beardslee (Kettle Falls) 10.
Spokane held Whatcom to 30 percent field-goal shooting and outrebounded the Orcas 51-38.
Sara Bergner led Whatcom (4-3) with 14 points.
Spokane will face Clackamas at 3 p.m. today.
Men’s basketball
Ben Mitchell of Sandpoint High School had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead Community Colleges of Spokane past Umpqua 78-65 at the NWAACC Crossover Tournament in Oregon City, Ore.
Eric Beal (North Central) scored 15, Jon Clift (Ferris) 13, and Zach Gianukakis (Republic) 12 for the Sasquatch (5-6).
Umpqua outrebounded CCS 38-26, but the Sasquatch maintained their lead on 60 percent shooting from the field in the second half.
Nick Green scored 31 for the Riverhawks (3-6).
CCS faces Skagit Valley for fourth place at 6 p.m. today.
