Collecting: ‘Little Lulu’ comics

Larry Cox King Features Syndicate

Q: I have three issues of “Marge’s Little Lulu” comics, Nos. 39, 81 and 123. Are they worth keeping? — Betty, Springfield, Ill.

A: According to most of the guides I consulted, they are worth a minimum of $100 each in good shape. As with most collectibles, condition is paramount. The value of a comic boils down to several factors, including condition, scarcity and demand. A good place to monitor the value of comics is eBay.

Incidentally, your issue No. 39 also features another popular cartoon character, Witch Hazel.

Q: I have a huge record collection including 45 rpm and 33 rpm discs. Although I’m not really interested in selling them, I am curious about values. — Ron, Binghamton, N.Y.

A: I, too, collect records. In fact, I currently have more than 45,000 in my personal collection. Here are several books that I find extremely useful: Topping the chart on my reference hit parade is the Goldmine Standard Catalogue of American Records 1950-1975 by Tim Neely, published by KP Books and now in its 5th edition. This massive guide has price listings for 150,000-plus LPs, 45s, EPs and Picture Sleeves. Also by Neely are the Goldmine Record Album Price Guide (KP Books, $24.99), which references 65,000 titles, and the Goldmine Price Guide to 45 rpm Records (KP Books, $24.99), with 75,000 listings. All three books are updated periodically so prices are fairly accurate.

If your collection is primarily records, Rockin’ Records: Buyers, Sellers, Reference Book and Price Guide published by Osborne Enterprises is also a good choice. It is $39 and can be ordered from the publisher, Box 255, Port Townsend, WA 98368; www.jerryosborne.com; and 1-360-385-1200.

A: Butch Jones is a member and former president of the Mid-West Miniature Bottle Club, and he has agreed to help you. His addresses and telephone number are 7410 NW 105th St., Oklahoma City, OK 73162; www.miniaturebottles.com; and 1-405-722-3237.
