Hoops will benefit cancer fund

The faculties from Mt. Spokane and Mead high schools, and Mead and Northwood middle schools will play their second annual Hoops for Hope benefit basketball game at 7 p.m. Monday at Mt. Spokane High School, 6015 E. Mount Spokane Park Drive.

The event is organized by the Associated Student Body classes from each school and will raise money for the Coaches vs. Cancer fund.

Admission to the game is a donation of $5 for adults and $3 for students.

The faculties from Mead and Northwood middle schools play against each other during the first and third quarters of the game. The faculties from Mt. Spokane and Mead will play during the second and fourth quarters to determine whether the east or west side of the district rules.

Last year the event raised $3,000 for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund for tsunami victims.

Cultural fairs planned

Salk Middle School’s cultural fair, hosted by Salk students of color, students who have had a cultural experience, or students who know something about their heritage and want to celebrate it will take place today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 6411 N. Alberta St.

The fair features students’ displays, music and artwork.

At 2:30 there will be an all-school assembly featuring a performance by the Rogers High School Steel Drum Ensemble.

Mead Middle School will celebrate Cultural Awareness Week Monday through Feb. 10. Each day of the week there will be an assembly to celebrate the culture/county of one of the school’s students.

The assemblies will be held from 8:25 to 9:10 a.m. each day at the school, 12509 N. Market St.

Monday is Black Hstory Day; Tuesday, Hispanic; Wednesday, Asian; next Thursday, Russian and Feb. 10 is Native American.

The student from each country or culture has put together a PowerPoint presentation with video graphics about their home country, and groups will perform native dances, songs, etc.

Each day the school’s cooks will be serving food appropriate for the country being presented.

Preview night at NWC schools

Parents and students who would like to know more about Northwest Christian Schools are invited to Academic Preview Night at both the elementary school and middle/high school campuses.

Academic Preview Night for prospective middle and high school students and their families is 7 p.m. Monday at the Colbert Campus, 5104 E. Bernhill Road.

NWC students and parents will give presentations about their experience at the school, and prospective families can meet teachers and take a tour of the schools. For more information call 238-4005.

Families with students preschool to sixth grade can attend Academic Preview Night at 7 p.m. next Thursday at the elementary school campus, 1412 W. Central.

There will be classroom displays, tours of the campus and the opportunity to meet teachers and staff. Call 328-4400 for more information.

St. George’s alumna’s artwork

Amy Tessier will exhibit her works “Figurative Paintings and Sculpture” today through Feb. 13 in the Upper School’s Art Gallery, 2929 W. Waikiki Road. An artist’s reception is planned for noon Friday at the gallery.

Tessier is a 1979 graduate of St. George’s and resident of Park City, Utah. She has exhibited works at the Sandpoint ArtWalk as well as at galleries in Utah and Colorado.
