If you’ve ever struggled with a lack of storage space, now there’s an easy do-it-yourself solution. This free-standing linen closet project makes it simple to add storage space wherever it works best – in the hallway, in the bathroom or in a bedroom – without a major remodel.

The closet features three large shelves on top, two shelves below and a big drawer in-between. Necessary materials include about 16 board feet of pine lumber (other woods will work), three sheets of plywood, a piece of hardboard and some pine molding. Glue, fasteners, some common hardware and the builder’s finish of choice round out the shopping list.

What you do

Basically a large box with shelves, a face frame, doors, molding and a drawer, the project is easy enough for any woodworker. To build, cut the pieces to size and assemble the cabinet using glue and nails. Next, assemble and attach the face frame, add the back, install molding, sand and apply finish of choice. Finally, attach the doors and the install the drawer.

The completed linen closet measures 68 inches tall by 29 inches wide by 14 inches deep.
