Young people find haven at Cup of Cool Water
Name of program: Cup of Cool Water
What it does: Gives young people, up to age 22, a place to hang out, do laundry, take a shower, get something to eat while downtown. Located at 1106 W. Second Ave. Day drop-in times are Tuesday through Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m., with laundry and showers. A lunch is served at 3 p.m. Evening drop-ins are Tuesday and Friday from 7 to 10 p.m., with dinner from 7 to 8:30. A clothing bank is available, and referrals are made for special needs by calling 747-6686.
Clients who need overnight shelter are referred to Union Gospel Mission, a Christian-based men’s shelter; Hope House, a women’s shelter; or Crosswalk, a youth shelter.
Who runs it: Founded by Mark Terrell in 1995, Cup of Cool Water is a nonprofit Christian-based organization. There are about 30 volunteer students from Whitworth College, Gonzaga University, Moody Bible Institute and other schools. Professionals also give time.

Typical or memorable client: Terrell said the organization serves about 400 people a year, some as young as 10. He recalled one young woman who dropped by the center: “She sat down, sighed in relief and said, ‘I just love coming here. It’s the only time of day I have peace.’ “
