Fort Clatsop work begins
ASTORIA, Ore. – Construction has started on the new replica of Fort Clatsop.
Fort Clatsop park staff, National Guard members and volunteers hauled logs this week to the fort site, where workers from Mount Rainier National Park began reassembling the pieces.
The work is targeted for completion by March 23, when the park hosts a commemoration of Lewis and Clark’s departure from Fort Clatsop in 1806.
The 50-year-old fort was destroyed by fire last October.
A trail leading to the fort site was put in to make the log-hauling easier, but it will be removed once the work is finished.
“When we’re done, we don’t want it to look like a construction site,” said Chip Jenkins, Lewis and Clark National Historical Park superintendent.
