CV Days on the Mall start Tuesday
A stroll through the Spokane Valley Mall next week has a bonus feature: art, projects and music provided by nearly 1,000 Central Valley students.
More than 30 displays beginning on Tuesday will highlight work from students in elementary and middle schools. They are part of the 21st annual Central Valley Days on the Mall, an event sponsored by the Central Valley School District to celebrate students and schools.
CV Days on the Mall will feature work by all grade levels with table-top displays throughout the first floor of the Spokane Valley Mall, 14700 E. Indiana Ave. The public can view the exhibits Tuesday through Friday, during mall hours 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The public also can enjoy the free vocal and instrumental performances of Central Valley students Wednesday through Friday. Performances in J.C. Penney Court will feature different schools and students Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7:30 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
A complete schedule of performances is posted on Central Valley’s Web site, www.cvsd.org.
Students learn about Japan
The students in Susan Henderson‘s third-grade class at Broadway Elementary spent six weeks immersed in Japan. The 21 students studied Japanese culture, including its songs, dances, artwork, Haiku poetry and basic words. The class also examined the similarities and differences between Japan and the United States.
Henderson has traveled to Japan and uses photos and items she has collected to enhance student learning.
Students capped off their journey through Japan with two performances for parents and the other third-grade classes. The half-hour shows included songs, poetry, facts about Japan and a demonstration of the Bon Dance – all performed by students wearing traditional Japanese clothing. The class also enjoyed a Japanese meal, including rice with chopsticks.
Additionally, the students took their learning beyond the school. On Feb. 24, they were scheduled to perform for the residents of Orchard Crest, Broadway Court Estates and Brighton Court retirement communities.
