Huskies bounce back with easy victory
Freshman Jon Brockman scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half and had a season-high 12 rebounds to help No. 10 Washington beat overmatched Cornell 87-71 Monday night in Seattle.
Justin Dentmon, also a freshman, added 15 points for Washington (12-1), which dominated the Big Red (4-8) inside with a 46-27 rebounding advantage in its final non-conference game.
The Huskies looked tired and almost uninterested initially following their 96-95 double-overtime loss to Arizona on Saturday. That defeat ended the nation’s longest home winning streak at 32.
Brandon Roy, coming off consecutive 35-point games against Arizona State and Arizona, had only 11 points.
Jason Hartford scored a career-high 17 points for Cornell, which fell behind by 22 in the second half but twice rallied within 13 late in its first game in the state of Washington.
The Big Red lost their 12th straight to a ranked team. Cornell also has lost all seven of its road games this season.
(1) Duke 84, Bucknell 50: At Durham, N.C., Shelden Williams stopped a rare Duke drought early in the second half with eight of his 23 points, J.J. Redick finished with 22 despite some poor shooting as the top-ranked Blue Devils (13-0) easily handled the Bison (9-3).
Williams added 11 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double, and freshman Josh McRoberts had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils.
(15) Texas 69, (4) Memphis 58: At Memphis, Tenn., P.J. Tucker had 24 points and 13 rebounds and Daniel Gibson added 18 points as the Longhorns (11-2) beat the Tigers (11-2), snapping Memphis’ eight-game winning streak.
Texas, ranked No. 2 for the first five polls of the season before consecutive losses, held Memphis almost 30 points below its average and sealed the win by going 17 of 19 from the free-throw line over the final 8:34.
Memphis had not lost at home this season and wanted to burnish its record before heading into Conference USA.
