Hokies will focus on stomp

Virginia Tech officials said Tuesday that they would review and deal with Marcus Vick’s apparent stomp on the leg of a Louisville player just before halftime of the Gator Bowl.

Athletic director Jim Weaver said that the school was embarrassed by Vick’s behavior, calling his step on the left calf of NCAA sacks leader Elvis Dumervil after a tackle “unacceptable” and “not reflective of Virginia Tech football nor of the values we hold at Virginia Tech.”

He said in a statement that the administration “will not condone such acts of unsportsmanlike conduct. We will review and assess this incident further and deal with it accordingly.”

TCU kicker shot to death

TCU freshman kicker Kasey Davis was shot to death early Tuesday, his body found in his car by police in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

The 20-year-old player had a gunshot wound to his chest and was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

Police arrested a suspect near the apartment minutes after getting a description from witnesses. Jeffrey Clay Lasiter had a rifle in the front seat of his car when he was pulled over.

The 40-year-old Lasiter was charged with murder and is in the Montgomery County Jail. Police are unsure of a motive.

Tommy Trojan’s last ride

Despite a recent plea from USC fans to stay atop his white horse for one more year, Chuck O’Donnell, known to fans as Tommy Trojan, will ride Traveler for the final time in tonight’s national championship game.

“It’s going to be exciting, it’s going to be thrilling, it’s going to be sad,” said O’Donnell, who first rode USC’s mascot in the late 1970s.

Williams, Davis enter draft

North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams announced he will give up his final year of eligibility to enter the NFL draft following a season in which he led the Atlantic Coast Conference in sacks.

Maryland tight end Vernon Davis will also skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft.

Kansas State hires Franklin

Green Bay Packers receivers coach James Franklin was hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Kansas State.

Franklin, 33, has 11 years experience. Before coaching with the Packers last season, he served NFL minority coaching internships with the Dolphins in 1998 and Eagles in 1999.

•Andy Coen was hired as Lehigh’s coach, returning to the school after spending the past six seasons as Penn’s offensive coordinator.

Mason gets contract extension

Minnesota coach Glen Mason has agreed to a four-year extension worth $1.65 million annually, rewarding him for leading the Golden Gophers to six bowl appearances in nine years. His 32 wins over four seasons is the best four-year total at the school in 100 years.

It’s quite a turnaround from 1997 when Mason inherited a woeful team that for many years was the Big Ten doormat.

Medlock pleads not guilty

UCLA place-kicker Justin Medlock pleaded not guilty to drunken driving charges in connection with an accident last month that seriously injured a female member of the university’s golf team.

Clarett posts bond

Former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett, facing robbery charges, posted bond and was released later in the day.

Clarett, who led the Buckeyes to the national championship three years earlier, faced a judge for the first time since he was accused of robbing two people with a gun behind a bar early Sunday.
