19 file for vacancy on City Council

A former Spokane City Council member and two former council candidates are among 19 applicants for a vacancy on the current City Council.

The applicants will now compete for a council appointment to fill a vacancy created when District 3 Councilman Joe Shogan was appointed council president earlier this month.

Shogan replaced former Council President Dennis Hession, who moved up to the mayor’s office in the wake of the recall of former Mayor Jim West in December.

Shogan has scheduled a council meeting for Thursday to interview candidates, and another session on Friday to consider finalists.

The applicants, in order of submission, are Curtis Ketchum, a nurse at Eastern State Hospital; Candace Mumm, president of the Spokane Plan Commission; Judith Gilmore, former candidate for City Council; John Biechler, retired Spokane library caretaker; Victor Frazier, former candidate for City Council; Lewis Griffin, former city administrator of Liberty Lake.

Also, Steve Corker, former City Council member; Andy Rathbun, lieutenant colonel in the Washington Air National Guard; Shane Maggart, Gonzaga University student; Charles Kearney, retired Seattle police detective; Louise Chadez, professor at Eastern Washington University; Curtis Fackler, owner of Payroll Plus; Elizabeth Beck, general manager of Super 8 Motel.

Also, John Waite, owner of Merlyn’s; Mark McCracken, Spokane Public Schools teacher; Dave Rideout, Spokane County engineer; Rob Crow, co-owner of Lloyd Industries; Matthew Howes, Xerox account executive; and Adam Thielen, student and former member of Spokane Teen Advisory Council.
