Bruins beat Ducks in OT
Patrice Bergeron scored the game-winning goal and assisted on two others to lead the Boston Bruins past the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 4-3 in overtime Monday in Boston.
Bergeron completed a 2-on-1 rush by taking a pass from a streaking Marco Sturm and firing a slap shop past Anaheim goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov 1:55 into overtime to give the Bruins their first win in four games. It was Bergeron’s 13th goal of the season.
The Bruins, who earned a point in their 2-1 shootout loss to Dallas on Jan. 14, won their first game since Jan. 7 to finish their seven-game home stand 3-3-1.
Tim Thomas, making his second start since getting called up from Providence on Jan. 10, saved 25 shots to record his first win since beating Buffalo 8-5 April 5, 2003. He suffered the loss to Dallas, despite stopping 36 of 38 shots.
Capitals 6, Coyotes 1: At Glendale, Ariz., Alex Ovechkin scored two goals, the second on an amazing flick while rolling on the ice, as Washington beat Phoenix. Ben Clymer and Matt Bradley had a goal and an assist each, and Dainius Zubrus and Brian Sutherby also scored for the Capitals.
Blue Jackets 4, Rangers 3: At Columbus, Ohio, Rick Nash’s breakaway goal late in the third period lifted Columbus past New York. Marcel Hossa, who was benched for the Rangers’ previous six games, tied it 6:56 into the third with his second goal of the game. But New York lost its second straight following a seven-game point streak.
Canadiens 4, Stars 2: At Montreal, Mike Ribeiro had two goals as Montreal scored on its first three power-play opportunities en route to a win over Dallas. Alex Kovalev scored on the man advantage and Michael Ryder added an even-strength goal for Montreal, which won for the second time in two games since general manager Bob Gainey fired Claude Julien on Saturday and replaced him as the team’s coach.
Senators 6, Wild 1: At St. Paul, Minn., Patrick Eaves had two goals and an assist as Ottawa routed Minnesota. Playing his first NHL game in his home state, Eaves recorded the first multi-point game of his career.
Canucks 4, Penguins 2: At Pittsburgh, Todd Bertuzzi’s fourth goal in two games gave Vancouver a two-goal lead, and Henrik Sedin sealed it with a power-play score in the third as Vancouver beat Pittsburgh.
Sharks 3, Lightning 1: At San Jose, Calif., Kyle McLaren, rookie Milan Michalek and Nils Ekman scored in San Jose’s sixth victory in seven games, a win over Tampa Bay.
Sabres 3, Oilers 1: At Edmonton, Alberta, Maxim Afinogenov had a goal and assist in the third period to lead Buffalo past Edmonton. Tim Connolly had a power-play goal, and Derek Roy also scored for Buffalo.
