Despite what you may have heard, the natural look is always in. Correctly applied, makeup should make you look as if you aren’t wearing any. Too much, and you look artificial and harsh. Too little, and you fade away.

The first rule in style is to figure out whether you should wear cool or warm tones. Fair-skinned people tend to look best in cool shades, while darker or olive skin looks good in warm colors. Keep in mind that there are cool and warm shades of almost any color, even red. Neutral shades can be worn by anyone, and they’re good choices if you’re not certain about your best shades.

Always err on the side of less, rather than more. Use just enough foundation or powder to cover uneven skin tone. Blending is the key to subtlety in makeup. Blend foundation well toward hairline and neckline.

Thick eyeliners or lip liners and dark streaks of blush draw attention to themselves. Smudge eyeliner before applying eye shadow, and make sure the lip liner doesn’t show through the lipstick.
