Financial aid available for parks programs

The Spokane Parks Foundation provides financial assistance to children and adults who may not otherwise be able to participate in city Parks and Recreation programs.

To apply for financial assistance for swim lessons and recreation program classes and activities, call 625-6200 for an application form or visit the Park’s Department’s office, seventh floor, City Hall.

Individuals, clubs, businesses or service groups can partner with the Parks Foundation to provide these scholarships.

To make a contribution, send a check to the Spokane Parks Foundation, Scholarship Fund, Seventh Floor City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd., Spokane, WA 99201-3317.

Emergency Shelter Grants being accepted

The city of Spokane Human Services Department is now accepting applications for emergency shelter grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. Wednesday in the city Human Services Department, Sixth Floor, City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.

The grant money is designated to help nonprofit agencies that shelter homeless individuals and families. These grants must be used during 2006-07 to renovate or rehabilitate a homeless shelter, to provide essential services at a shelter or for shelter maintenance and operations activities.

Deer Park Quilt Show

Deer Park Winter Quilt Guild will hold its bi-annual quilt show Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Deer Park School Administration Building, 428 N. Main Ave.

With close to 100 quilts, the show features 42 entries from Deer Park along with quilts from Loon Lake, Colbert, Chattaroy, Mead, Elk and North Spokane quilters.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, Roberta Schroeder will give a demonstration on making two-side quilts. Learn how to make a chenille pillow at 1 p.m,. and at 2 Melissa Smith will give an appliqué lesson. Peggy Ostness will talk about ideas for using vintage quilts at 3.

On Sunday at 1 p.m. Sandi Stillman will talk about using up your scraps.

Vendors at the show include The Sewing Basket, Longaberger Baskets and Julie Rinard Quilting Merchandise and Patterns.

Admission is $1. Raffle tickets will be sold for the Winter Rose flannel quilt made by the guild, with proceeds benefiting the Dollars for Scholars program that helps students in Deer Park and Riverside.

Winter Fest wants your tree

The Deer Park Kiwanis Winter Festival is still accepting discarded Christmas trees for its annual bonfire at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Civic Center.

Trees may be taken to the Civic Center or call (866) 743-5247 to arrange pickup by volunteers.

•The Chief Garry Park Neighborhood Council will meet at 7 tonight at Stevens School, 1717 E. Sinto Ave.

•The Northwest Neighborhood Council will meet at 7 tonight at Audubon Park United Methodist Church, 3908 N. Driscoll Blvd.

•The Minnehaha Neighborhood Council will meet at 7 p.m. next Thursday at Cooper Elementary School Library, 3200 N. Ferrall St.
