Habitat store plans two-day anniversary sale

The Habitat-Spokane Builders Surplus Store is celebrating its sixth anniversary with a two-day sale, offering everything at 25 percent off.

The store, which opened six years ago, now offers 30,000 square feet of merchandise.

Shoppers are thrilled when they discover that the store, on the southwest corner of Trent and Hamilton, offers a large inventory of quality construction materials, said manager Jeff Howard.

Businesses are also happy to discover it’s better to donate surplus building supplies than to pay storage and inventory costs, said Howard.

For example, a local manufacturing company recently donated 428 high-end windows and doors – we’re talking wood-sash, metal-clad items, at 30 to 50 percent of the retail price.

“You can buy a high-end door that would retail for $4,500 for $1,100 or you can buy a door here for $6,” said Howard.

A private party recently donated 50,000 rolls of wallpaper and borders. “Last weekend four women spent four hours going through the wallpaper. They had a great time,” said Howard.

All inventory in the store has been donated, and all proceeds support the efforts of Habitat for Humanity-Spokane.

Since opening, the store has raised enough money to build approximately 15 houses. This year the plan is to build six more houses at an average cost of $72,000 each.

By recycling these items, more than 2,000 tons of construction materials have been diverted from the waste stream.

The store, staffed by volunteers, offers a variety of merchandise including appliances, plumbing fixtures, paint, lumber, roofing, cabinets, hardware, tile, electrical/lighting, flooring and carpeting.
