Today’s project

Don and Dave Runyan U-Bild

It’s no surprise that the classic A-frame cabin design is one of the most popular for second homes. An A-frame combines the features most often desired in a vacation home- openness, ample sleeping and storage space and spacious decks - in an attractive, affordable, simple and strong package. This do-it-yourself version is no exception.

The cabin has 700 square feet of living space that includes a small kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedroom and a deck on the first floor, with two bedrooms and a balcony on the second. A central fireplace warms both floors.

What you do

The simplicity of the design also makes it relatively easy (and inexpensive) to build. The basic structure is formed by two large A-frames connected by a central beam. The roof is made of exterior-grade plywood panels (lapped like giant shingles), and the foundation consists of nine concrete piers. It’s a big project, but it’s also fun, highly satisfying and a valuable investment.

How to order the plan

The A-Frame Cabin plan, No. 381, is $9.95 and includes complete floor plans and elevation drawings with all dimensions, construction directions with 10 photos, a detailed materials list and a toll free help line for project questions. Do-it-yourselfers should be aware that some alterations may be necessary to conform to local building codes.

A package of cabin plans, No. C81, is $22.95, includes this project plus plans for two others. A 32-page guidebook, “Vacation Homes,” (No. A50) featuring more than 30 vacation-home floor plans, is available for $4.95.

A catalog picturing hundreds of do-it-yourself projects is $2. Please include $3 for postage and handling (except catalog-only orders) and allow about two weeks for delivery.
