Victims named in garage deaths
Danielle L. Bailey was identified Sunday as the woman found dead by her daughter in a Spokane Valley garage.
Bailey, who also used the last name Brown, was discovered Saturday morning along with the body of Travis William Johnson, 32. Spokane Valley police said the pair died from apparent carbon monoxide asphyxiation and that it appeared accidental.
Bailey’s daughter, who had celebrated her eighth birthday the day before, entered the garage about 10:15 a.m. Saturday looking for her mother.
The girl found Bailey, 28, and Johnson inside a 1967 Ford pickup that was parked in the garage at 12918 E. 16th Ave., just across from McDonald Elementary. The pickup’s ignition key was turned on, but the engine wasn’t running.
Spokane Valley police spokesman Cpl. Dave Reagan said an autopsy on Bailey and Johnson will be conducted today, but it may take toxicology tests to determine the exact cause of death. Toxicology reports often take several weeks. The tests also will likely show if methamphetamine was a factor in either death, police said. A small quantity of the drug was found inside the pickup.
Child Protective Services placed Bailey’s three daughters – the others are ages 4 and 5 – in temporary custody with their maternal grandmother.
The girls’ father was in Spokane County Jail at the time of Bailey’s death and was notified by a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office chaplain.
Johnson, whose most recent address was 1800 S. Geiger Blvd., is described as an acquaintance of Bailey’s. His mother lives near Cheney and also was notified by the sheriff’s chaplain.
Bailey was living at the 16th Avenue house with three other men, all of whom were friends or associates, police said.
